The annual Magic Millions National Sale, which starts on the Gold Coast next week, has become an institution in the Southern Hemisphere. While it's certainly earned kudos with its vast numbers and extended sales period across four categories, the reputation earned has been via one simple variable - major racetrack success by its graduates and, in the case of its broodmares, the progeny they have gone on to produce. As is customary, the Weanling book leads the way from 22-24 May inclusive, boasting 725 lots by a record 119 sires - 22 of them represented by their first crops. Then there's a three day break ahead of four days (28-31 May) of filly and broodmare sales that comprise 1,070 catalogued lots. The Yearling catalogue (5-7 June) is a treasure trove of 553 youngsters (by 126 stallions of which 20 are freshman yearling sires). Nearly all are eligible for the $11 million+ Magic Millions Race Series. The marathon sale closes on 7 June when tried horses will go through the ring.
