NSW to the Fore on the Gold Coast

Last week’s Gold Coast Magic Millions race day proved a bonanza for New South Wales breeders and sires based, or which formerly stood, in the state. Of the eight “open” races, the QTIS race excluded, all fell to progeny conceived in New South Wales while over half the card’s winner were bred in our state.

Leading the way was the exciting filly Sunlight, the result of a covering by Zoustar who stands alternate seasons at the Thompson family’s Widden Stud. A first crop daughter conceived at Widden, she is out of another New South Wales bred mare in Solar Charged, a daughter of Charge Forward. Sunlight was bred by a partnership of Widden, Qatar Bloodstock and Mr D Fletcher.

The 3YO Guineas also went the way of a NSW bred, tough colt Pierata outclassing his rivals to continue his sire Pierro’s excellent season. The Greg Hickman trained Pierata was bred by Hobartville Stud just outside Sydney.

Other winners on the card were Viddora and Invincibella both by I Am Invincible,  Care To Think by So You Think, Tumultuous by Fastnet Rock,  Zafina by Stratum and Problem Solver by Hinchinbrook.
