NSW Thoroughbred Workforce Development Update

Launched in 2021, the NSW Thoroughbred Workforce Development Project has seen over 600+ participants complete FREE training across multiple NSW locations. Valued at over $1.6 million dollars in course costs and wage subsidies, funded largely by NSW Government.

Here’s a snapshot of the pathways offered, everything from High School entry level to management training all supporting the bigger picture of recruitment challenges. Progress reports assisting neighbouring states to map out a broadened scope to future proof our great industry.

Whilst education and training is a way for us to assess a standard, development pathways help us set higher benchmarks and the qualification gives valuable satisfaction to the individual. This project is based on three key elements.

ATTRACTING NEW ENTRANTS

  • Discovery Tours at Races, Studs and Stables.
  • Experiential introductory programs for High School Students in Yrs 10 to12  “Thoroughly Schooled Hunter Valley and Silverdale Academy Internship” students from across the state.
  • Recruitment drives “Work With Horses NSW” offering direct on the job traineeships & employment.

TRAINING THE WORKFORCE

  • Traineeships enrolled in Cert III Horse Breeding.
  • Accredited Foaling Night Watch Courses.
  • Apprentice schools.

RETAINING QUALITY PEOPLE

  • Multiple Seminars and Workshops for continued professional development.
  • Accredited Supervisor and Leadership courses, that can be used towards a complete Cert IV Horse Breeding or Cert IV Leadership and Management.

NSW is the largest Thoroughbred industry employer, needing a force of people to carry out the day to day. TBNSW are proud to be leading a project that is “doing and not just talking” about a major issue faced by many industries, seeking their next crop of people entering the workforce.

This project and many others that TBNSW is involved with, proves how collaboration brings evolutionary changes towards a sustainable future, our industry will be stronger together by building the workforce we need side by side.

With so much more to come stay tuned to Bred To Win and follow the progress, Monday nights 7.30pm on Sky Thoroughbred Central.
