The Thoroughbred Report’s ‘Matings Mix’ series is in full swing, and in this article they spoke with Baramul Stud’s racing manager Luke McDonald, about the huge support Gerry Harvey is throwing behind Vinery’s Hawaii Five Oh.
Bred and raced by Gerry Harvey, the beautifully bred son of I Am Invincible carries a similar profile to his three-time Champion Sire. Like his sire, Hawaii Five Oh retired as a Group 3 winner, in his case, a dual Group 3 winner of the Fred Best Classic and the Hawkesbury Guineas.
Following the pattern of ‘Vinnie’, Hawaii Five Oh was also Group 1-placed, finishing behind the subsequent The Everest winner, Think About It (So You Think {NZ}). Although unplaced in that race, he was arguably unlucky.
He also boasts an exceptional pedigree, being out of the Group 1-winning mare Aloha (Encosta De Lago) and a full sister to the late Group 2 winner and multiple Group 1 placegetter Libertini.
It’s understandable why Harvey is keen to support Hawaii Five Oh, with Baramul Stud’s racing manager, Luke McDonald, indicating that around 70 mares from the operation will visit the Vinery stallion.
“Gerry and I have the utmost belief in Hawaii Five Oh, as do industry leaders Vinery, Coolmore, Segenhoe, Eureka Stud and Yarraman Park Stud. This is evidenced by their support with shares in Hawaii Five Oh and showcases their confidence that he will be a huge success,” McDonald told TTR AusNZ.
“The depth of pedigree from his female side is one of the best in the stud book. The advantage we have is knowing this family typically throws all the right attributes of what makes a fast racehorse and a commercial yearling in the sales ring.
“He is going to receive the best start to his stud career with Gerry and Katie Harvey sending over 70 A+ broodmares, including 17 stakes performers and 10 stakes-producing mares. We have also actively purchased mares throughout the year that we felt would suit the stallion physically and on the pedigree page.”
Star of the band
Among Hawaii Five Oh’s debut book is Baramul Stud’s Shamardal (USA) mare No Evidence Needed, a daughter of the Group 2-placed Generosa (NZ) (Generous {Ire}). No Evidence Needed outperformed her dam on the track, retiring with six victories, including the G2 Let’s Elope S. and the G3 Southern Cross S.
She was also placed in the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. and the G1 Schweppes Oaks, and finished fourth in the G1 BTC Cup, highlighting her versatility.
At stud, No Evidence Needed has proven equally successful. She is the dam of the Group 2-placed Discharged (Snitzel) and Move To Strike (I Am Invincible), who won the G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce S. last season.
“No Evidence Needed is one of the blue-hen mares we were eager to send to Hawaii Five Oh as she has already produced a 2-year-old Group 1 winner by I Am Invincible, and we feel he will inject the size and quality that he possesses into her progeny.
“He’s nearly at a full book for his opening season, and I can assure anybody that organises to inspect Hawaii Five Oh will not be disappointed.
