The Thoroughbred Report’s ‘Matings Mix’ series is in full swing, and in this article they spoke with Henry Field, Managing Director of Newgate Farm, about the mares that the debut stallions Militarize (NZ), Ozzmosis, and King’s Gambit will be covering in their first season.
Henry Field’s Newgate Farm, home to 17 stallions, has welcomed three new stallions this season. Standing their first seasons at Newgate Farm this spring are the exciting trio: Ozzmosis, Militarize (NZ), and King’s Gambit.
They join a star-studded roster, headed by the ‘statistically freakish’ Extreme Choice at $275,000 (inc GST), along with second-season sires: State Of Rest (Ire), In The Congo and Artorius, who will receive significant support from the operation.

The Thoroughbred Report caught up with Managing Director Henry Field to learn which mares will visit the ‘new boys’ and the approach to mating plans this season.
“We’re really getting behind our second-season sires,” Field told TTR AusNZ. “We’ve got a large number of mares heading in that direction, and we’re taking quite a position on In The Congo this year. We are very bullish he’s going to produce cracking stock.
“For me, he’s got all the credentials to make it. He’s by a Champion Sire (Snitzel) and he’s one of the best-looking horses we’ve got on our roster, plus he had blistering speed. As for State Of Rest and Artorius, we’ve got a contingent of mares heading to them.
“They were truly elite horses. State Of Rest won a Cox Plate, In The Congo claimed the Golden Rose, and of course, Artorius won the Blue Diamond.
“We actually did a study with the Newgate Farm stallions and found that almost 50 percent of our second-season stallions have averaged more with their second crop of yearlings than with their first crop to the sales.
“With that in mind, that’s why we are prepared to aggressively support them this season.”
Coolmore winner attracting strong support
Standing at an introductory fee of $44,000 (inc GST), Ozzmosis has been a popular addition to Newgate Farm and a regular feature in The Thoroughbred Report’s earlier ‘Mating Mix’ articles and the ‘Value Sires’ segment.
A son of Zoustar, who won the G1 Coolmore Stud S., Ozzmosis not only emulated his sire in the ‘sire-making’ contest but also his grandsire Northern Meteor and his great grandsire Encosta De Lago, who won the event when it was known as the Ascot Vale S.
Among the mares set to visit Ozzmosis in his debut season is the stakes-producing mare Prompt (Exceed And Excel) and the stakes-winning mare Sprightly Lass (Snitzel). Prompt has proven an exceptional producer; she is the dam of the G1 Tatt’s Tattersalls Tiara victress Prompt Response (Beneteau), who also won the G2 Emancipation S., the G2 Breeders Classic, and the G2 Dane Ripper S.
Her full brother, Prompt Return, claimed the G3 Maribyrnong Plate, and Diamond Glow (Bel Esprit) who won the Ian Miller 2YO VOBIS Gold Carat and was placed in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies).
Ozzmosis will also serve the G3 DC McKay S. victress Sprightly Lass, the daughter of Snitzel who also won the Listed Bel Esprit S. She was purchased by Newgate Bloodstock for $400,000 at the 2020 Inglis Chairman’s Sale.
Pane In The Glass (Testa Rossa) is another mare to be served by Ozzmosis. She won the G3 Silver Shadow S. and the Inglis Nursery. Pane In The Glass was also placed in the G1 Champagne S. and the G1 Sires’ Produce.

As a broodmare, the daughter of Testa Rossa is the dam of the G2 Euclase S. victress Xilong (Deep Field), also a Group 1 placegetter, and the Group 2-performed filly Roomooz (Fastnet Rock).
“Sprightly Lass was a very fast Group-winning Snitzel mare, while Pane In The Glass was a top 2-year-old and has, in turn, become a really top producer as a broodmare.”
Proven producer heads Militarize’s way
Trained by Champion Trainer Chris Waller, Militarize was a top-class 2- and 3-year-old. As a juvenile, the son of Dundeel (NZ) won the G1 Sires’ Produce S. and the G1 Champagne S. Returning in the spring, Militarize claimed the G1 Golden Rose S. and continued his good form in the autumn, placing in the G1 George Ryder S. and the G1 Doncaster H.
Militarize is standing his first season for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST). Field said, “This season, Militarize will serve mares such as Nettoyer, who we own in partnership with Blue Gum Farm, and Golconda, a mare we own with the China Horse Club. She’s the dam of Cannonball and Marine One.”
Nettoyer (Sebring) won seven races from 1600 to 2050 metres, including the G1 Doncaster H., the G1 Queen of the Turf, and the G3 Aspiration H. twice. Her first foal, a filly by Capitalist, recently turned two, and she was served by Snitzel last season.
Golconda (Snitzel) won the Listed Merson Cooper S. and was placed in the G1 VRC Oaks. As a broodmare, she is the dam of the G2 Rubiton S. winner Marine One and his full brother Cannonball (Capitalist), a Group 3 winner and Group 1 placegetter.

Golconda’s latest foal to race, Supercilious (Written Tycoon), is a 2-year-old and has been Group 3-placed.
Field bullish on Gambit
King’s Gambit, a son of the three-time Champion Sire I Am Invincible, will stand his debut season for $22,000 (inc GST). Bred by Gooree Stud, he is out of the Group 3-winning and Group 1-placed mare Sultry Feeling (Encosta De Lago).
On the racetrack, King’s Gambit won the G2 Roman Consul S. and the Listed Debutant S., and he was also placed in the G1 Golden Slipper.
“Newgate Farm and partners are very bullish on our young stallions this season and will be supporting them aggressively with some top-class mares,” said Field. “King’s Gambit is a stallion we feel is a real bullseye—a very commercial prospect. We’ve got some lovely mares heading his way, including Absolut Glam, a Group 1 winner and a great producer. He’ll also serve Long Time Ago, a young Group-winning Redoute’s Choice mare.”
Absolut Glam (Snowland) won the G1 Winter S. and the G1 Moonee Valley Fillies Oaks Classic, and was also placed in the G1 Manikato S., as well as fourth in the G1 Stradbroke H. and the G1 BTC Cup. She is the dam of Group 3 and Listed winner Jazz Song (Fastnet Rock) and the granddam of Saartjie (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}), a Group 3 winner, and Sword Point (American Pharoah {USA}), who was placed in the G2 HKJC Jockey Club Cup.
Long Time Ago (Redoute’s Choice) won three races, including the G3 Summoned S. She is a daughter of Johannesburg (USA) mare Once Were Wild, who won the G1 Australian Oaks and the G2 Chairman’s H. and was also placed in the G1 Sydney Cup.
“We have a partnership with Gooree, and they have an arsenal of top-class mares to support King’s Gambit, similar to what Emirates Park did with Tassort in his early seasons,” Field added.

“It’s fantastic to have support from Gooree, one of the best breeders in Australia. We’ll also have backing from Kingstar Farm, owned by our partner Matthew Sandblom, who has a large and powerful broodmare band supporting these three stallions.
“As previously outlined, we will also be heavily supporting our second-season sires, with more bookings into them this year than in previous seasons.”
All stallions supported
All 17 of Newgate Farm’s stallions are set to receive strong support from the operation and its shareholders. “We’ll obviously use our three proven stallions: Extreme Choice, Russian Revolution, and Capitalist,” said Field.
“We’re booking mares to all of them. Naturally, because we believe in the calibre of stallions we stand, we’ll be supporting every single horse on our roster. There’s not one stallion on the Newgate Farm roster that won’t receive support from our broodmare band, Kingstar Farm’s broodmare barn, and our other partners.
“We have around 200 mares, and in this game, you have to put your money where your mouth is. I’d say very few stallion operations have as many farm-owned mares supporting their stallions.
“The Newgate Farm roster is very versatile, with something for everybody: proven, unproven, early maturing horses, and top-middle distance horses. They are all physically attractive with elite talent. I feel very strongly about our roster, and by market share, the Newgate roster had the largest in Australia.
“We’re well on track to cover the most mares with our stallions and to be the biggest stallion operation by market share in Australia again. It’s been a huge result and a tremendous amount of hard work by the team. It’s an achievement we’re incredibly proud of and something we hope to maintain.”
